ENGLISH SUMMARY

Erkki Pohjanheimo has worked for a considerable time as an Executive Producer, Producer, Director and Head of Light Entertainment at YLE TV1. In 1997 he left YLE and founded his own Production Company Sunny Notes Oy. He has also taught extensively in various audio-visual institutions.

Erkki Pohjanheimo has produced and directed numerous international artists' concerts and TV shows, such as: Benny Goodman, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Lionel Hampton, Spencer Davis Group, Mikis Theodorakis, Cilla Black, Natalie Cole, Jose Carreras, Montserrat Caballe, King's Singers, Vanessa Mae and Johnny Logan, to mention a few.

In 1995, Erkki Pohjanheimo designed and produced three sizeable TV shows for TVRI, Indonesian TV in Jakarta, covering The Indonesia International Song Festival.

Documentaries

In Sunny Notes Oy Erkki Pohjanheimo has produced and directed documentaries for YLE TV 1, like Lasten Sairaala (Children's Hospital), A Life in a Trailer (Elämä asuntovaunussa), A Man with 100 Dogs (Sadan koiran mies), Under the Lucky Stars (Onnellisten tähtien alla), Against the Wind Mills (Tuulimyllyjä päin) and Jewels from Curly Birch and Great Sallow (Visaa ja raitaa koruiksi). In June 2001 he also directed the first Merikanto Song Contest from Mäntyharju Church for MTV3, Finland (Owl).

Celebration concerts

In 2004 Erkki Pohjanheimo produced and directed the celebration concerts of Singer Eino Grön and Composer Kaj Chydenius for YLE TV2. A Celebration concert of KOM Theatre was on the air in 2007 on YLE TV2.

Operas

In 2009 Erkki Pohjanheimo produced and directed an opera of President Risto Ryti named Prisoner of Freedom (Vapauden vanki) by Ilkka Kuusisto for the Finnish Chamber Opera. The recording has been released on a sales DVD in March 2009.

Latest opera recording is A Woman Like Frozen Champagne (Nainen kuin jäätynyt samppanja) by Ilkka Kuusisto. The opera tells a story of a Finnish writer Aino Kallas.

Pohjanheimo's largest productions were two folklore operas, The Horse Escaped (Karannut hevonen) and Charcoal of St Petersburg (Pietarin miilu) Both operas took place in the 70's. Seppo Seppälä worked as a Co-Producer/Director. Both operas were based on The Ancient Songs of the Finnish People (Suomen kansan vanhat runot). The Horse Escaped was composed by Heikki Valpola and the libretto was written by Sulevi Peltola. Charcoal of St Petersburg was composed by Toni Edelmann and libretto written by Ilpo Tiihonen.




Education

In 2001-2002 and 2005-2008 Erkki Pohjanheimo ran a six month Course for Multi-camera Directors, in Adulta aRTO (Adulta Radio and Television Institute). In the years 2003 – 2011 he ran two weeks Multi-camera Music Directing Course twice a year in Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia
(Later: Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences/ Film and TV).

Erkki Pohjanheimo has worked as a singer and as a recording artist, performing until current.
He started his career as a schoolboy in Tampere in 1959 as a lead vocalist at the Eino Vuori Dance Orchestra, under the artist name Juhani Heimo.

1960 Pohjanheimo participated in The Championship Contest of Pop Music Singing of Finland in Helsinki and finished second. That was the beginning of his career as a recording artist. Singing and studying the violin were a strong foundation for his later career as a Television Journalist an Director.

Erkki Pohjanheimo's recording career began in the 1960s. He sang his first record for Musiikki-Fazer in 1961 (Fontana, Philips, Decca). Later, Musiikki-Fazer's sound record production was named Finnlevy, and Pohjanheimo made records there. He sang his last album in 1967 for Musiikkitalo Westerlund (Parlophone).

1963 Jorma Weneskoski hired Erkki Pohjanheimo as the soloist of his dance orchestra and in 1965 he Pohjanheimo founded his own band. Pohjanheimo became a freelance singer in 1969.
